why did you use the stick welder and not the Mig for this? any special steel rods used here?
actually I think it is good to have a weak point that is easy to fix avoiding bigger damage and more complicated fixes.
Andrew Camarata

The mig welder was on the roof. I used 7018 rods.

What you do welding over slak is really not done the weld is then really poor and will brake. Always clean before second weld.

You have to do more rust an contaminant removal in the weld zone before you start welding in plates or anything, those welds aren’t going to be nearly as strong as they should be due to porosity

Hi everybody! Forgive me if it is a question a little bit stupid but I'm in doubt: can I be electrocuted If I touch the metal part where the negative claw of the welder is connected while I'm welding? I do not touch, just asking! Thanks in advance
Fuz - 4 timer siden
@AlbatrossDude Welding is a low-volt process. The current much prefers to take the path through the electrode, the workpiece and the ground/return cable. Compared to your body, it's literally the path of least resistance.

I have a very important question: Does anyone knows why Andrew didn't use his MIG welder instead of the stick welder? I ask this question because I want to know when to use a stick welder and when to use a MIG welder. Did he use the stick welder because it can handle thick metal or because his MIG welder wasn't around.

Andrew, it has been to long since you learned stick welding. “You can just start doing it...” A seasoned welder once said that you need 10.000 hrs of practice before you really can master stick welding. Besides getting comfortable handling the rod and understand what adjustments you need to do based on the look of the first bead you need to be able to chose the right type of rod as well as the right thickness, adjust to different rod characteristics, different welding positions (vertical, horizontal, etc), amperage, speed, rod angle... Even if the ambition is not to become a “master” it is pretty deceptive to tell someone that it is easy.

Have to agree with your buddy - sometimes plowing just makes it more slippery. The snow gives your tires something to grip (especially if its slightly damp). Plowing often leaves the hard packed ice behind which is actually more slippery. Thanks for another great video!

That should read "Whenever welding OR GRINDING near hydraulic cylinders, cover them up" I've seen a $150,000 cylinder wrecked because some moronic contractor was doing hot work above it and peppered the piston rod with a grinder. over time this caused the chrome to pit and in turn, destroy the seals. As the installation was a tidal control gate , it entailed divers a tugboat-mounted crane, plenty of shore based personel and a massive disruption to service. The cylinder weighed 11 tons. Be careful. Very careful.

Hi Andrew I build (fabricate) many different things (ex-woods mechanic 35 yrs) mostly self taught by working with others. I notice you do a lot of metal cutting with grinders that would be much faster with a torch. What is your reasoning and where do you find cutting wheels that last and what brand of grindng wheels do you use. I am not criticizing how you do things, I try to learn new thing and the reasoning behind it. love your channel. I am not pretty with my welding or cutting but everything works and stays together. A lot of makeshift repairs to minimize downtime with little to work with. Keep up the good work.
Andrew Camarata
Andrew Camarata - 9 måneder siden
I feel the torch is a little sloppy. I have a plasma cutter too which would have worked well for that cut. I guess I could have used that. Grinder did it fine though.
