I think that some companies call each other to find out if their prices are close to each other.
If your prices are too low then you lose out and so does your competition. At the same time you will make less on each job but you will get more jobs to make up for it.
Some people go the other way, sometimes on purpose. They want to charge more per job so they will have more profit per job, and they'll have fewer jobs with less wear and tear on their equipment and more spare time and still make quite a bit of money.
But still a lot of companies check the prices of their competition.
Also check with your customer to see what kind of service they expect for the price. People are willing to pay a little more if they get better service.

People asking to get rid of the firewood always give me a bit of confusion. Especially taking into account that chimney on the house of this specific client. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I run all sorts of heavy equipment for Belleayre Mountain and I’ve built houses for 8 years and just getting into do some side jobs with my own equipment so I probably how have be around 1500 for that job because I have a dump trailer but that’s a lot of trips so normally I’ll have the stone yard drop the material off at my jobs but keep up the videos I love watching them on my free time

$1200 for gravel sounds ok. The $800 on the tree is kinda high. I would say $600-$650. It is close to the house so there’s that.

The thing I noticed about Andrew is that he is not afraid of work and does a nice job. He stays late to get the work done. I see a great work ethic that will definitely pay good dividends since others will noice it. My only concern is that he pushes too hard on the body by not lifting correctly with his legs. Back issues will creep into his life and will no longer be able to do the work once he reaches his 50s and 60s. Back pain will become the norm. Suggest Andrew being good to his back!
If I were hiring people again, I would not hesitate to hire Andrew because of the work ethic, but also for many of the skills he has learned. Young people today could learn a lot from him since there is no free ride in life and you reap what you sow. Great Job Andrew!!!!👍👍👍
On another note. Andrew does a nice job using his drone on other videos to show the job sites and country side. His choice of music is good too.👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Definitely a man living the American dream!

Good work spreading that gravel Andrew. 1200 seems like a bargain for that job. But then a lot of people price 50% materials 50% labor. But the tree I'd charge 500 pushing it over with the SS or excavator.

Yeah, that's not enough for those couple of days - that's a lot more work than 200 per day profit - 400 a day profit is more like it - of course add in the youtube vid profits and he's there and maybe well beyond that.

I learn more in watching one video with Andrew, than I do watching 5 videos somewhere else. I love how you stop what you are doing and fix stuff that you find broken, even in the middle of other work. That is how I work and I appreciate those who do the same. I also very much enjoy how you handle not getting involved with the troll comments and just refer to everything as youtube. You have calm, patient demeanor that makes watching your videos enjoyable and relaxing. Keep up the great work. PS, love seeing your dogs along with you in everything you do. Although I am not a pet owner myself, I can tell how you treat people based on how you treat your animal friends.

I'm thinking way to much on the tree $400 to $500 I think that's even pushing it. Tree looked like maybe 30' tall get a rope on it get your dad in the small dump truck to pull on it as you saw it down... talk what an hour at most with equipment transportation? I don't know? It's your time your equipment , your videos... speaking of could you talk about you video equipment and maybe any monies you might be making for your videos and product affiliate programs? If not you should be .

Skid steer work, up here is typically billed as follows - $150 first hour (60 minutes travel time max.) just to show up - plus $75/hr for the work (with a 2 hr min). So if I show up, do a job that takes me 15 minutes - it's $300. I make no money on those small jobs really. I try and line up 2-3 small jobs like this at a time so I can do them in one day and send a guy out with single axle dumper and bobcat and he can handle these by himself. Filler work really. On material costs like aggregates, top soil, mulch delivery I charge $75 for delivery plus material at a mark up (usually 100%) - so If I'm delivering 12 yards of screened soil that costs me $10/yard ($120 my cost) - I charge the client $75 for trucking PLUS $20/yard $240 - so that client pays $415 per load. So you prices are pretty much in line I think.Lot's of people don't consider the investment in equipment, insurance, fuel costs and maintenance - never mind buying the equipment. I am still cheaper than most of the competitors …… but I always have lots of work to keep me and my guys busy.I also do some landscaping construction like pavers, walls, fencing, etc.. and typically bid work at "double my cost" including labor - so if materials, labor, fuel, machines cost me $2000 - then I bid it at $4000 as a general rule. At month end when I do my books I am looking at 45%-60% contribution to cost which puts me around that 35%-40% in gross margin (profits). You always miss little things like diamond blades, a few items you didn't cost in like PL adhesive, a few extra sticks of rebar or whatever - but If I can estimate the ":bulk" of my materials - I will be Ok.

Pricing a job isn't easy, especially when you're trying to grow your business. I'm retired from the engineering and construction world of work and have seen estimators royally screw-up a project for not taking into account ALL the variables. You mentioned here a very important variable that helped you base your price on - location to the quarry and to your "office". You, also, gave a quote on taking down the tree based upon its location to the house and risk factor of take-down. A 'regular', non-risky removal of a tree of this size might be $500. You're smart. So, all in all, I would say you've got the basics down. You're not getting rich overnight, but you're on your way. ALSO, you have excellent ratings (4.9/5.0) in your area - not only the cost, but the quality of the work garners repeat customers. You're friendly and easy to talk to, AND you always go above and beyond when doing a job. You will do well for a long, long time. P.S. Dana Grey's cost breakdown is most EXCELLENT!

I think your pricing is a little light Andrew.Crunch you expense fuel for dump truck the skidsteer the pick up the log splitter I'd say you burned $150 in fuel for all equipment on that job paying and yourself at least $30 bucks and hour X's 14 hours, $450 for materials you have $1020 or so in expenses and you charged the guy $1200, yeah I'd say your a little light. On the profit margin.
